- God’s call on Elisha is clear, but Elisha’s response is fairly dramatic. He completely gives up on if life as a farmer by burning the plows and eating the oxen with his neighbors. Refresh your memory by reading 1 Kings 19:19-21. Let’s look at a few New Testament passages that show us how important it is do exactly what Elisha did here.
- Read Galatians 5:13-26. Why is it so important for someone to crucify the flesh/sinful nature (24)? What is the difference between crucifying the flesh and just trying to contain the sinful nature in some way?
- How is putting the flesh to death similar to Elisha’s burning of the plows?
- The community BBQ that Elisha holds is a public expression of his calling. What kinds of public or community expressions to we have a Christians today that reveal a break from the past and a move towards life in the Spirit?
- Take a look at Colossians 3:1-17. Of course we are to put off the old self, but what are we to put on as disciples called to follow Jesus Christ?
- Elisha seemed very willing to take on his role as prophet, he had the right attitude to God’s call. As you consider the passages from Galatians and Colossians, what is our attitude to be as Jesus’ disciples?
