This Life Group season runs from September 15 – December 8, 2024.
This week’s text was Matthew 19:26: Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
- Take a look at Peter’s response to Jesus’ words, Matthew 19:27. What would lead Peter to respond this way?
- Jesus’ response to Peter is promising. How do the words of Jesus in Matthew 19:28-30 address Peter’s concerns?
- If we keep reading Matthew 20:1-16, Jesus elaborates on an his response to Peter. What is the point of this parable?
- Put yourself in the position of the two different groups of laborers. How would you feel if you were the early, contract workers? How would you feel if you were hired late in the day for a full day’s wage?
- In Matthew 19:30 and 20:16 Jesus says that the last will be first and the first shall be last. What do you think this means? How should these words affect the attitude and motivation of someone who follows Jesus?
- This parable is not about salvation by works. We can’t earn salvation, but we should be grateful for it. What encouragement do you take from this parable? How can you learn to be more grateful for your salvation?
“So the first shall be last…Christ only meant to say that every one who has been called before others ought to run with so much the greater alacrity, and, next, to exhort all men to be modest, not to give themselves the preference above others, but willingly to share with them a common prize.”
