This small group season runs from March 26 – May 21.

In Psalm 118:22-23 we encounter the cornerstone that has been rejected but now is the crucial building block. Jesus draws a connection between the cornerstone and his role as Messiah in Matthew 21:33-46. Interestingly, this passage from Psalm 118 and the connection to Jesus are referenced a number of times in the New Testament. Let’s take a look at two of these passages.

  1. Peter mentions Jesus as the cornerstone in Acts 4:8-12. Why does Peter use this reference when he addresses the religious leaders?
  2. What do you make of the fact that some of the religious leaders Peter is addressing may be some of the same people Jesus addressed in Matthew 21? (Certainly, they would have heard about Jesus’ use of the passage).
  3. It is easy to see that the religious leaders may have missed the point from both Jesus’ and Peter’s use of Psalm 118:22. In Peter’s case, a healed man was standing next to him, showing God’s mighty power at work. What do you think blocked these leaders from acknowledging the obvious fact that God was working through Peter and John? How can you sometimes be resistant to God’s work around you?
  4. Now take a look at Ephesians 2:19-22. Paul’s use of the cornerstone image reveals a larger work of God than just personal salvation (though that’s part of it). What does the cornerstone do among God’s people, according to this passage? How does this encourage you about God’s work within his Church?
